Common questions
“What guests most often ask us”
Sixteen answers in three groups: arriving, the casino tables, and dinner and the building.
Arriving
“Coming for the first time”
- What is the dress code?
- Neat and warm. Most guests come as they would to a good restaurant: a collared shirt, a jumper or a dress. Work boots, boots from the forest tracks and good coats are all welcome.
- Do I need a reservation?
- It is wise on Fridays and Saturdays, and helpful otherwise. Walk-in guests are seated when a table is free, and the host will say frankly how long that may be.
- Where do I park?
- There is a gravel car park at the side of the lodge, and kerbside spaces on Mottram Street. On busy nights the overflow goes to the council car park a short walk away.
- Is the building accessible?
- The dining room and the casino room are on one level, with a ramp at the side door. Please tell the host if you need help, and she will meet you there.
- What if I am running late?
- Telephone the host. A dinner table is held for twenty minutes, and the telephone is answered whenever the lodge is open. If you are going to be later than that, a message lets the host decide how best to look after you.
- Can I come alone?
- Many guests do. A seat at the end of the long table is kept for solo diners, and the croupiers happily make room at the tables for anyone who comes on their own.
The tables
“Cards, wheels and clay chips”
- What games can I play?
- Roulette, blackjack and poker. The poker is Texas Hold'em and Omaha on most evenings and Seven Card Stud and Five Card Draw on Thursdays. Nothing else is dealt in the casino room.
- Do I play for money?
- No. Every game is played with chips that carry no money value. They are not sold, not exchanged and not taken home, and no prize of any kind is offered.
- Is anything in the room electronic?
- No. There are no pokies and no electronic tables or screens of any kind. Every game is dealt by hand by a croupier, as it has been since the lodge opened.
- Can I play online?
- No. The lodge has no app and no online games, and nothing can be played away from the building. The tables exist for adults who are here in person.
- How old must I be?
- Eighteen or over for the casino room, with a photo card checked at the green door on every visit. Younger guests are welcome in the dining room with an adult.
Dinner and the building
“The kitchen, the children and the verandah”
- What time does the kitchen close?
- The kitchen takes its last orders at 20:30. Tea, coffee and puddings continue until the doors close at 22:30. The lodge is open Wednesday to Sunday.
- Are children welcome?
- In the dining room, yes, at any hour. A smaller portion of pie or soup can be arranged. The casino room is for guests aged 18 and over only, and the doors between the rooms are opened at half past five.
- Do you cater for vegetarians and allergies?
- Yes. There are vegetarian dishes on the menu every night, and Gareth Clarke will speak to any guest with an allergy. Please tell the host when you book so that the kitchen can plan.
- What is the verandah for?
- Fresh air, a quiet word and a view of the stars on a clear night. In cold weather a rug is brought out. The verandah is a break from the tables as much as from the dining room.
- Can I hold a private evening?
- Yes. The lodge keeps a few evenings each season for groups, and the details are on the Private evenings page. Please write to the booking address with your numbers.
- How do I give feedback?
- Tell the host or Glenn Russo on the night, or write to the booking address. Every note is read, and every complaint is answered, by one of the people on the Meet the team page.
